Sweet and delicious cantaloupes contain plenty of water and are low in calories, which make them a great summer fruit. One-third of a cantaloupe melon has only 60 calories and enough water to quench your thirst. Cantaloupes are high in Vitamins A, C, and Potassium. One-cup of cantaloupe contains 5986 IU’s of Vitamin A, which helps protect from heart disease. Vitamin A is also important for good vision. Cantaloupe’s rich sources of Vitamins C and Potassium are needed for healthy cell growth and protection from disease.
To purchase the best cantaloupe, look for melons that give to slight pressure when you press on the rind. Avoid melons that still have a stem attached, as they may not be mature. Melons should be free of cuts or bruises. Cantaloupes can continue to ripen at home by leaving them out of the refrigerator for 1-2 days. When the melon begins to soften, refrigerate to preserve. Ripe melons purchased from the grocery should be consumed within approximately 5 days.
