Down the inner aisles of the store, you will find many of the prepackaged, quick and easy to prepare foods. Check your favorite items for saturated fat, sodium, and sugar content per serving. The daily recommended % values are listed next to each. The goal is to consume up to a total of 100% of each value, daily. Sugar does not have a % value next to it, because there is no current labeling law, which requires the recommended amount be listed.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended adults consume no more than 5% of their total daily calories from sugar. This would equal approximately 25 grams of sugar a day, per adult. The recommended allowance of sodium is 1500 milligrams a day, saturated fat is 10% of total fat calories a day, and 7% saturated fat for those with heart disease.
Next week, I will review newer products with lower sugar content, and even ways to stretch these calories. Stay tuned for more grocery store tour news!
